food bloggers for slave free tomatoes | bloody marys

Did you realize that slavery is still happening in this country today?

It’s shocking to hear, but it’s happening across Florida’s tomato fields.

Through the Fair Food Program, developed by the tomato pickers themselves, fast food companies like McDonald’s & Subway have instituted a zero tolerance policy for slavery & the other atrocities that come along with forced labor, by paying just 1.5 cents more a pound for fairly harvested tomatoes.  Over the past 15 years, over 1,000 people have been freed from slavery in the U.S. tomato fields, but the situation could be much better.

Which is why we, & several other food bloggers through The Giving Table, are donating today’s recipe to spreading the news on this cause.

& here’s where we need your help.  It’s hard to have access to fairly harvested tomatoes, if your grocer isn’t stocking them.  As of right now, Whole Foods & Trader Joe’s are the only two grocery chains to be on board with the Fair Food Program.  Join us today in sending a message to some of the nation’s largest grocery chains, Kroger, Publix & Ahold (owners of Stop & Shop, Giant & Martin’s).  It takes only 30 seconds to make your voice heard.

& what should you do with all these delicious fairly harvested tomatoes?  Why make a bloody mary of course.

BLOODY MARYS
makes about 2 10z cocktails

6 medium tomatoes, roughly chopped
3 carrots, peeled & roughly chopped
2 green onions, roughly chopped
1 red bell pepper, roughly chopped
6 fresh basil leaves
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic
1/2 lime, juiced
salt & freshly ground pepper
6oz vodka
ice, for serving

Add all ingredients to the jar of a blender. Blend on high until liquified.

Pour the contents through a fine mesh strainer, then add back to the blender & blend once more, until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. Pour over ice in individual glasses, add a straw & serve.

I had no idea this was happening. Ironically, I happened to post a tomato recipe today. I’m going to update my post with a link to this post in the hopes a few more may see. Thanks for sharing!
